Culver City Active Streets

Culver City, CA

Lyric served as project designer for Deborah Murphy’s team on this ATP Cycle 2 grant application for Culver City. The $2.8M request was to implement pedestrian and cyclist safety enhancements surrounding La Ballona Elementary School. The streetscape design included a new 2-way cycle track on the west side of Elenda St between Washington and Culver, buffered by armadillos and parking. High-visibility crosswalks with curb extensions and perpendicular ramps were proposed at 18 intersections surrounding the school.

Elenda Street - Proposed

This concept shows a parking-protected, two-way cycletrack at a typical “conflict zone” such as a driveway. Buffered parking with physical delineators help prevent cars from crossing over into the cycletrack. Green painted lanes are proposed at driveways and other conflicting intersections.

The design team received input from Culver City’s Bureau of Street Services and transportation consultants Fehr & Peers and proposed bicycle infrastructure enhancements including bike boxes, painted cycle track at conflict areas, sharrows and reprogrammed signals for bicyclists. The design work was based on the NACTO Urban Street Design Guide and Urban Bikeway Design Guide and utilized countermeasures and lessons learned from cities at the forefront of innovative safety measures including Vancouver, Seattle, Portland, and San Francisco.

Matteson Ave & College Ave - Proposed

Sketch of proposed improvements adjacent to La Ballona Elementary School showing a raised crosswalk that seamlessly connects the northeast corner of the intersection to the expanded sidewalk in front of the school drop-off near the playground. The raised crosswalk is at the same level as the sidewalk, and therefore does not require curb ramps down and back up again, making the crossing even more accessible to people of all ages and abilities. The linear curb extension on the south sidewalk serves as a landscaped buffer for students gathering at the campus entrance.
